Hospital standardized mortality ratios trends released for Canadian hospitals

New hospital standardized mortality ratios (HSMRs) for 2007–2008 were released for eligible hospitals and health regions across Canada by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). The HSMR is a measure that reflects the number of deaths observed in a hospital relative to what would be expected, based on the average Canadian experience. The measure accounts for several differences in the types of patients a hospital sees, such as the age, sex, diagnoses and admission status of patients.
