Surgeon Scorecard helps consumers to know more about a surgeon before their operation, through the comparison of the performance of surgeons who do common elective procedures. ProPublica calculated death and complication rates for surgeons performing one of eight elective procedures in Medicare, carefully adjusting for differences in patient health, age and hospital quality. Eight elective procedures reported include knee replacements, hip replacements, three types of spinal fusions, one in the neck and two in the lower back, gall bladder removals, prostate removals, and prostate resections. Performance is based on data related to deaths while in the hospital and readmissions to the hospital within 30 days.
