Health Care Quality & Safety Leaders Feel No Improvements on Patient Safety After 2 Decades of Work

A study published in January in the New England Journal of Medicine found that 1 in 4 patients experience an adverse event in hospitals. The NEJM Catalyst followed up on this study with a series of interviews with 13 health care quality and safety leaders to seek how they were thinking about these data and what was happening at their institutions. NEJM published the commentary from these leaders on the persistence of adverse events in care delivery — and where health care organizations should go from here. All leaders agreed with the basic conclusions of the Bates paper, that 2 decades of work on patient safety have not produced the improvement we need.
