HCCI Releases 2021 Health Care Cost and Utilization Report

Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI) released its 2021 Health Care Cost and Utilization Report.  HCCI’s annual reports examine year-over-year and 5-year cumulative trends in health care spending for individuals with employer-sponsored insurance, segmented by health care service category.

The 2021 Health Care Cost and Utilization Report presents data on health care spending, utilization, and average prices from 2017 through 2021 for individuals under the age of 65 who receive health insurance coverage through an employer.  The report relies on de-identified commercial health insurance claims contributed by CVS Health/Aetna, Humana, and Blue Health Intelligence during this period.

This year’s report (2017–2021) found that average annual health care spending for people with employer-sponsored insurance spending increased to $6,467 in 2020 from $5,630 in 2020. Per person health care spending increased 15% in 2021, following a 4% decrease in 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.
