RevCycleIntelligence writes of a recent study of negotiated rates under the new hospital price transparency rule that identified the most expensive type of hospital to receive a brain MRI.
Compliance with the Jan 1 2021 Hospital Price Transparency Rule has been spotty over the past two years, and researchers from Michigan State University, Yale University, and Johns Hopkins University recently leveraged the data from Turquoise Health to compare commercial rates for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain before and after contrast (Current Procedural Terminology code 70553). They investigated hospital characteristics associated with commercially negotiated prices nationwide.
The study – Factors Associated With Hospital Commercial Negotiated Price for Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Brain – found that nonprofit and government hospitals had higher commercially negotiated prices for brain MRI than for-profit hospitals.
