AIHW New Release – MyHospitals: Healthcare-associated Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections

A new data release from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) shows 2020-21 data for healthcare-associated Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections in public hospitals and in private hospitals that choose to participate. The public hospital rate of 0.74 cases per 10,000 public hospital patient days is below the nationally agreed benchmark of 1 case per 10,000 patient days and the overall rates for each state/territory are also below the benchmark. The percentage of cases that were resistant to antimicrobial treatment bracket (MRSA cases) has decreased from 27% in 2010-11 to 17% in 2020–21.
