AIHW Release Reports on Performance in Australia’s Emergency Departments During Pandemic

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released two reports on the performance in emergency departments (EDs) and elective surgery waiting lists in 2021-22 throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two new reports show:

  • Emergency department activity stabilizing: In 2021–22, there were 8.79 million presentations to EDs in public hospitals – a rate of 339 presentations per 1,000 population. This was a very similar level of ED activity to that seen in 2020–21 (8.81 million ED presentations – 339 presentations per 1,000 population).
  • Analysis of elective surgery data show decrease in the the number of admissions from elective surgery waiting lists, and the additions to the elective surgery waiting list compared to last year and the last five years.
