A recently published study looked at the quality of coding and its impact on hospital data quality, and revealed why many of Australian hospitals fall short in critical areas. The study identified the factors affecting coding quality that impact data quality, with the top causes for poor coding quality in Health Information Systems (HIS) departments identified uniformly by hospitals of all sizes, and personnel across all roles as:
- Incomplete clinical documentation.
- Variations in coding standards interpretations.
- Pressure caused by quota to HIMs and clinical coders.
