AHRQ Inpatient Quality Indicators (IQI) v2021 Software: Minor Release

Share this:

AHRQ announces a minor release of AHRQ Inpatient Quality Indicators (IQI) v2021 Software in April 2022.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has updated the IQI module in both the SAS QI and WinQI v2021 software in this minor release. It addresses an issue with the All-Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRG) Limited License Grouper software provided with v2020 and v2021.  The updated versions of the newly released software are as below:

Issue: The APR-DRG Limited License Grouper previously included with SAS QI and WinQI did not produce admission-based APR-DRGs. The software instead produced discharge-based APR-DRGs resulting in inconsistencies with the Inpatient Quality Indicator (IQI) risk-adjustment model methodology in v2020 and v2021.

Resolution: The new limited-license grouper embedded in SAS IQI v2021.0.2 and WinQI v2021.0.1 requires present on admission (POA) indicators to produce the admission-based APR-DRGs. This aligns the updated AHRQ IQI Software risk-adjustment models with their intended methodology of capturing risk at the time of admission. AHRQ released SAS IQI v2021.0.2 and WinQI v2021.0.1 on March 28th, 2022.

Users Impacted: After implementing the updated version of the Limited License Grouper, users should expect to see an increase in their risk-adjusted rates for several IQIs (IQI 08, 09, 12, 30, and 31 with observed-to-expected ratios ranging from 1.50 to 2.67). Users calculating only numerators, denominators, or observed rates are not affected.

Release Date: AHRQ IQI v2021.0.2 Software was released on March 28th, 2022.
