The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) released the second edition of the Illinois Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Report in April 2021. The first report included detailed statewide data and recommendations that would help prevent maternal morbidity and mortality, while also improving the overall health of women of reproductive age. This second report identifies statewide patterns in maternal health and provides recommendations directed at key stakeholders to prevent maternal mortalities and morbidities. The report expands the discussion to include factors that play a role in maternal health and contribute to the health disparities and inequities observed in Illinois’ maternal health outcomes.
The report is based on data from maternal deaths that occurred in 2016 and 2017, and were reviewed by the state’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee. The report found that each year 75 Illinois women die while pregnant or within 12 months of pregnancy.
