A CIVHC review of two newly required race and ethnicity fields that payers began submitting recently to the CO APCD shows that for commercial payers, race and ethnicity for the majority of insured individuals is listed as “unknown or not specified”, while Medicaid and Medicare data is more complete. CIVHC is working with all payers to improve the collection and reporting of this data to enable person-level disparity analyses. In the meantime, the CIVHC team has been working to geocode the CO APCD which will enable them to bring in census tract-level socioeconomic and demographic data to support advancing health equity. This is a major step forward in being able to start analyzing health care and the impact of racial and social injustice by bringing in outside data sources such as the American Census Survey, among others.
