In 2016, hospitals in U.S. metropolitan areas had a higher average rate of opioid-related inpatient stays (31 per 1,000 stays) compared with hospitals in adjacent rural areas (20 per 1,000), or those in more remote rural areas (16 per 1,000). Metropolitan hospitals had higher average hospital rates of opioid-related inpatient stays than rural-adjacent and/or rural-remote hospitals in most divisions, but in New England rates were high regardless of hospital location.
