The St. Louis Area Business Health Coalition (BHC) released the third Issue Brief of its 2019 St. Louis Health Care Industry Overview. This issue related to performance of health plans. The Issue Brief noted quality results remained flat or declined while insurers’ medical costs grew, signaling a decline in value. Hospital costs were the largest share of medical expense, and plans often pay hospitals double or triple the Medicare rate. Question raised whether insurers are doing enough to stem cost inflation and drive better outcomes.
