In 2016, 91,800 obstetrical delivery inpatient stays had a substance use disorder (SUD) diagnosis (24.3 per 1,000 deliveries). Among women giving birth in hospitals and diagnosed with substance use disorder, rates of severe pre-eclampsia/eclampsia were higher for those living in urban areas (44.3 per 1,000 delivery stays) than for those living in rural areas (31.8 per 1,000).
