Many Privately-Insured Pennsylvanians Receive Unexpected Medical Bills

A data brief from Altarum Healthcare reports one in three privately-insured Pennsylvania adults received a surprise medical bill. The data brief was based on results from a 2018 survey of Pennsylvania adults that examined how prevalent surprise bills are in the Commonwealth. While respondents reported receiving unexpected bills regardless of insurance status, this analysis focused on the respondents with private health insurance, that is insurance from an employer or that you purchase on your own. Compared to adults with Medicare, Medicaid, Tri-care or Veterans Health, consumers with private insurance have fewer protections against high and unexpected out-of-pocket costs.
