Association of State Medicaid Expansion With Quality of Care and Outcomes for Low-Income AMI Patients

A new study, published in JAMA, found State Medicaid expansion was associated with a significant reduction in rates of uninsurance among low-income patients hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), but found no improvement in in-hospital quality of care or mortality compared with non-expansion states.  The study sought to establish among adults hospitalized for AMI, did uninsured rates, quality of care, and outcomes change in states that expanded Medicaid under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act compared with nonexpansion states. The cohort study of 325 343 patients who had been hospitalized for AMI found that state Medicaid expansion was associated with a significant reduction in rates of uninsurance among patients hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction. Among low-income patients, there was no improvement in in-hospital quality of care or mortality compared with nonexpansion states.
