Findings from a new report, released by Healthwatch England, on emergency readmissions in England, shows the number of emergency readmissions grew by 9% in the last year, significantly faster than at any other point over the previous five years. However the current lack of detailed data means that it is difficult to establish if this is good or bad for patients. The proportion of emergency readmissions, where someone has returned to hospital within just one day of being discharged, has increased by 15% year-on-year. The sector still cannot report on how many emergency readmissions were unavoidable and which ones could be prevented.
