A new Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI) data brief Medicare Advantage Health Care Utilization: Hospital Readmissions reports five hospital readmission measures similar to those reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for the Medicare population. This is the first in a series of briefs examining use of health care services in the Medicare Advantage population.
Using their national claims database, HCCI calculated thirty-day all-cause hospital wide readmission rates and readmission rates for four specific conditions: heart failure, acute myocardial infarction (AMI) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia. They found that readmission rates declined from 2010 through 2014 across all types of hospitalizations. The largest decreases were observed among cardiac related conditions – heart failure or AMI.
