Healthgrades, an independent health-care rating company, recently released its 2011 Healthcare Consumerism and Hospital Quality in America report which evaluated the quality of care at nearly 5,000 U.S hospitals for 27 different medical diagnoses and procedures. The study measured patient results based on mortality and in-hospital complications rates. From 2008 to 2010, HealthGrades analyzed about 40 million Medicare discharges from 5,000 nonfederal hospitals. HealthGrades rates hospitals based on data that hospitals submit to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
