Compliance with a new surgery checklist is the latest measure of patient safety to be publicly reported by Ontario hospitals, writes The Hamilton Spectator.
Ontario launched a mandatory online reporting system in September 2008, starting with C. difficile infection rates after several deadly outbreaks. The reporting system, aimed at improving patient safety, has grown to nine indicators, including staff hand washing compliance rates. Hospitals were mandated to start using a standard surgical safety checklist April 1 and will start reporting compliance rates July 31.
