New site to provide consumers in Maine with hospital cost information

A new Web site to be unveiled later this month by the Maine Health Data Organization, will all consumers to compare the cost of 15 to 20 common medical procedures at different Maine hospitals of similar size and mission. The MHDO, which was established by the Legislature in 1996, is an independent agency that collects clinical and financial health care information and makes it accessible to the public.

The Times Record reports there are also plans to make it possible to cross-reference cost data with hospital and physician quality information that is being kept by the Maine Quality Forum, an outgrowth of the state’s Dirigo Health agency.
