Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) will cease reimbursing hospitals will for adverse patient events identified by the National Quality Forum if the error was preventable by the hospital. Such events include procedures that are performed on the wrong side of the body, at the wrong site, or on the wrong person.
Other insurers such as Aetna and Wellpoint now include provisions in some contracts that they will not pay for care related to 28 “never events” identified by the National Quality Forum. UnitedHealth Group and Cigna are also considering moves.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) are adopting this formalized policy to improve hospital patient safety and quality as well as reduce costly medical errors.
