California’s Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development recently released on its Web site (www.oshpd.ca.gov), 2006 and 2007 hospital death rates for eight procedures or conditions, including strokes, hip fractures, balloon angioplasty and brain surgery. The report ranks hospitals based on how death rates compared to state averages.

AHIP Hi-Wire writes that in 2006, 33 hospitals performed significantly better than average in at least one category, while 98 hospitals did worse. In 2007, 25 hospitals ranked better than average, and 94 ranked below average.
