Measure Type: Cost
Utah’s Department of Health provides public information on pneumonia charges and on the quality and safety of Utah hospitals. Forty-two Utah hospitals participated in the data collection. The reports are derived from hospital claim records. The measures are developed from The Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ). Updates are made quarterly.
Pneumonia is an infection which takes place in the lungs. It can be caused from bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Patients usually obtain pneumonia while they stay at the hospital for another medical condition. This is dangerous when a patient’s immune system is weak causing (in some instances), resistant to antibiotics. To help prevent pneumonia many individuals receive a flu shot once a year from their physician.
Utah’s report informs consumers of the average hospital charge for pneumonia in adults. The website also contains outcome measures (actual and expected death percentages) of pneumonia deaths in Utah hospitals.
