Utah’s department of health has created a hospital comparison report on hip and knee surgeries and conditions. The website offers several charts on different surgeries performed in the hospitals. The data is available in a pdf format, excel, or on the web page.
Hip fractures usually occur in the elderly population. This is where there is a break near the top of one’s thighbone (femur). Usually when the hip is broken you are unable to stand or move that leg. In some instances a patient will need to have surgery on their hip. The hip is fixed by removing the damaged cartilage and inserting a metal plastic.
Mortality rates are provided on hip fractures, and hip replacements. Hospital charges are also available on hip joint replacement; knee joint replacement; hip and femur (thigh bone) procedures for trauma; knee, lower leg and ankle procedures; fracture of femur; and bi-lateral knee joint replacement (both knees). For the mortality rates on hip fractures and hip replacements, patients can view the percentage of deaths per hospital. For the other surgeries, information on the average cost for a minor to major level of illness is provided. The website is updated quarterly. Data is collected from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
