The Premier healthcare alliance and a group of healthcare leaders, last Thursday, launched a comprehensive project called “QUEST: High Performing Hospitals” to improve patient safety and quality in the nation’s hospitals while safely reducing healthcare costs. This three-year project that will reward hospitals that achieve certain quality and efficiency measures and help them share best practices.

AHA News reports that Hospitals and health systems can enroll in the voluntary QUEST program (an acronym for quality, efficiency, safety and transparency) through September. The program will measure their performance in five areas: mortality, harm avoidance, appropriate care, efficiency and patient satisfaction. In the third year, hospitals that perform in the top quartile will receive monetary rewards. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement will offer technical assistance to the program, which about 60 hospitals have joined to date.
